“Abundance is not something we acquire, it is something we tune into”

Wayne Dyer

This year is a new start for me. I had quite a life changing year last year, and in many ways, I felt that this New Year was a brand new start of creating a whole new me! I decided to choose a word that I would focus on all year. After many conversations with my husband, I decided to choose the word Abundance.

I have thought about this word for a couple months now. I know there is so much tied up in the word… some good feelings, and some bad. We might think about financial abundance first… or maybe we think that abundance means “too much”. Brene Brown has a quote that I love, “The opposite of scarcity isn’t ‘Abundance’, it is ‘Enough'”. I like that. But for me, this year, I needed the word Abundance. I needed to remember that I have “More Than Enough”.

Functioning out of scarcity is often my “go to mode”. Here’s my scarcity talking…

Finances: “I better spend the money on this cool thing I want because I might not have the money again.”

Time: “I don’t have enough time to do the things I need to get done, so I better not even start.”

Energy: “I don’t have enough energy to get my projects done… or spend time with people… or clean my house… or… so I will just sit and look at Facebook all night!”

Possessions: “I don’t have enough clothes… enough art supplies… enough books… enough furniture… enough little cute things to put around my house (etc.)… so I better keep them all just incase I need them again.”

The truth is that I have an Abundance of all of those things. I have enough… AND MORE! My mindset and self-talk needed to change.

The way we talk to ourselves impacts everything. Dr. Norman Doidge, author of “The Brain That Changes Itself” says that the brain will change the way it works, and even the literal structure of the brain, just by what we think and how we talk to ourselves. Thoughts, perceptions, and the things we do actually impact the way chemicals are produced and used in our brains. This is a big deal!

Financial Abundance is a strong desire for most of us. Most of us don’t feel like we have Abundance in this area. We always want more. We don’t just want “enough”… we want more then we have… whatever that amount is. We want an Abundance.

This year my husband and I want to focus on having financial abundance so that we can have “More than Enough”. We want to be free to give more… do more for others… do more for our future, and our present selves.

But I want to learn how to focus on my Abundance I have already. How am I using it now? How am I working to create it for my family? Tuning into Abundance, and an Abundance mindset, takes intention.

* Some things to think about…

~How can you tune into your Financial Abundance?
~What do you want to do with your Financial Abundance? How will you make this happen?

Time Abundance is another area where I want focus. We all have the same number of hours in the day, but I want to be intentional about creating space in my life so I have time for the important things. We are a culture who prides itself on being busy. When someone asks how you are, the answer is often, “Crazy Busy!”. This answer has become a badge of honor and a symbol of importance. We over schedule and run around doing everything in the world we can find to do. I know I am guilty of this!

I don’t want to be that person. I want to create space in my life this year so I have time for everything that is important. I am creating Abundance in my life by simplifying, prioritizing, and saying “NO”. I am telling myself I have time for all that is important to me. My job is to figure out what those important things are. It’s easy to waste time when you don’t have a plan. I thought about my days … weeks… months… years. I have spent so much time on things that aren’t important. I have enough time. I have an Abundance of time. I came to the conclusion that I am not too busy. I have time for everything that is important.

* Some things to think about…

~ Where are you spending your time?
~ What are the top three things you value?
~ What do you need to say NO to?
~ How will your share your Abundance of time?

Energy Abundance might be the place I struggle most. Another word for energy in this case is motivation. As I get older I just don’t feel like doing things sometimes. I feel like sitting on my couch and playing Candy Crush. Too often I have a “scarcity mindset” when it comes to energy and motivation.

Our brains want us to “feel our way into a better way of acting”. We want to “feel like doing things”. But the truth is that our brains can work both ways. We can “act our way into a better way of feeling”. When we just do things, even when we don’t want to, our brains can catch up. Our feelings will change. How many times have you not felt like going to a party or even doing a project around your house, but when you started doing it, you got excited and loved it? Our brains were created with a lot of energy… an Abundance of motivation…we just have to go find it!

* Some things to think about…

~ What are you putting off because you “just don’t want to”?
~ What would you do if you found an Abundance of Energy or Motivation?

Possession Abundance is tricky. When I wrote that phrase I cringed a little. I am working hard to “declutter”. I don’t want a bunch of stuff around me any more. But letting go of things can be challenging sometimes. Our self-talk sounds like this… “I remember when I got that!” or “What if I need it later?” … I am learning to let go and trust in the Abundance I have. I am learning that having an Abundance of possessions means that I find Joy in all of the things I have. It also means I don’t have things in my life that will distract me or clutter my life. This is a process. It is cleansing. It is simplifying to find Abundance.

* Some things to think about…

~ What do you have around you that holds you down?
~ Which room will you go through this week and let go of things in order to find Abundance?
